Children

I’ve been trying to do some thinking about “serious adult stuff” lately. In the past 2 weeks and even prior to this, the bfriend has brought up having kids together. Now in the past when he’s mentioned this I’ve just let his thoughts slip by without giving a response. But he asked me if we could have kids soon?!?!?! I bolted out the door and haven't been back yet. No just joking, but really I didn’t reply but the fact that he’s been mentioning this more and more often means he’s seriously wanting this to happen.

I’m in a bind though, I really don’t know if I’m ready to have children yet, can someone please tell me!!! I just feel I may be too young to have kids , I’ve just started dancing and I’m loving that, I’m paying off my debts slowly but surely and I really do enjoy my job. I can do waht i want when i want and not have to consider a cute little human.

Children are a lifetime commitment and as cute and adorable as they are, they are a lot of work and from what I’ve heard a lot of money! I know it sounds like I’m considering buying a pet of some sort and there’s not much emotion involved but that’s the way I have to do things.

Sure I WANT children, going over to Sydney and seeing our baby niece founded that for me but am I really and truly ready for children – will I ever be ready for children. I want to be able to give my kids everything they need and deserve in their life and I’m not 100% sure if I can do that at this point in my life.

Then it comes to our relationship – my idea has always been to be married before I have children, but the bfriend has already been married and divorced once and want’s to have kids before he gets married again.

So I just really don’t know what I want - I guess my answer may be in here - if I don’t think I’m ready I’m not?

I cannot offer a whole lot of help here. Other than to say that you must be prepared to give yourself 110% to your children. Be ready to wear your heart on your sleeve. Be ready to be on duty 24x7.

But most importantly, you will NEVER be financially ready. You just make do...

To echo Maggs, the people I know with kids haven't been fully prepared for it, but the human ability to adapt to change does show that people can cope.

However, its not just the financial requirements but also the emotional requirements. You don't want to be lamenting not living your life before you start living for someone else's life. ie a kid.

But its your call. :) Not much help, eh?

If you know you want kids, but you are more sure of not being ready than you are of being ready, then it's not time.

    You're young. You've got time. Don't rush.

You'll never be ready. People say it all the time, and unless you're independently wealthy, it's true. They require a lot of sacrifice. That doesn't mean that you have to give up your dance classes. In fact, you'll be dying for the adult interaction and a way to get back into shape.

I'm a planner, so perhaps you can set up some kind of timeline goal for yourself. For example, maybe it will take two years for you to pay off most of your debts and have some money to decorate and save for the baby. It could become something you both could work towards together, and maybe even pay off quicker in anticipation or want of that little baby in your lives.

It truly is a wonderful thing to behold, these little ones, but don't do it if you want to enjoy your youth a little longer. We stopped hitting the bars after college, and had settled into our home life when we decided to start. One MAJOR word of assvise: If you want to avoid the incredible uncomfortableness that is a summer pregnancy, start trying for the baby on day one of the summer. If you get pregnant in the summer, then you are guaranteed to have a more comfortable cool weather pregnancy.

Here's an example that I hope will help.

I am ready for baby #2 and preparing my body for the experience.

My girlfriend Amy is thinking about it as well.

Then she told me that she was holding off until after next July, when we turn 30. She says you only turn 30 once and she wants to get totally hammered.

This is a difference in priorities. I'm not wrong. She's not wrong. But we're not in the same frame of mind.

He he he thanks to all of you. The sentiment i get from you all is people are pretty much never ready for kids. This sucks cause i am a planner, i wrote my packing list for going interstate 2 or 3 weeks early i think, Christmas dinners are listed and planned. Arrgghh

Anyhow this is something that needs more thought and discussion and like Ms Crayonz said myabe just to sit and plan the finances as best we can and put it to a timeline would be a good idea too.

    Thanks everyone!@!
